Identity as the Foundation of NIST Alignment in K–12

Presenter: Vincent Haass
Description: As K–12 districts face increasing cybersecurity threats and growing expectations from auditors, insurers, and state agencies, alignment with the NIST Cybersecurity Framework has become a practical necessity. This session explores how modern Identity and Access Management (IAM), Single Sign-On (SSO), and secure rostering practices serve as foundational controls for meeting NIST expectations.
Attendees will gain a clear understanding of how identity-centric strategies support least privilege, reduce organizational risk, and create a more defensible cybersecurity posture, without adding operational complexity. Real-world examples, including how platforms such as ClassLink are used in K–12 environments, will illustrate how districts can operationalize these principles at scale while improving both security and user experience.
