Accessibility Isn’t Optional: Designing Digital Learning That Works for Every Student

Presenter: Paula McDougald
Description: Digital tools have expanded how educators share information and learning materials with students, but they can also create unintended barriers if accessibility is not considered during design. From classroom documents and presentations to school websites, videos, and learning management systems, many common digital resources can be difficult to navigate for students with disabilities, and often for many other learners as well.
This session introduces practical strategies educators can use to make their digital materials more accessible and inclusive. Participants will explore simple adjustments that improve accessibility in everyday tools such as documents, presentations, videos, websites, and online learning platforms. The session will also highlight how accessible design practices improve clarity, usability, and learning outcomes for all students.
Participants will leave with practical techniques they can immediately apply when creating digital assignments, instructional materials, course content, and school communications.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Identify common accessibility barriers in digital instructional materials and online content
- Apply simple strategies to improve accessibility in documents, presentations, websites, and multimedia
- Design assignments and digital learning experiences that support diverse learners
- Recognize key accessibility considerations when using websites, school platforms, and learning management systems
