Grading Smarter, Not Harder: AI-Assisted Feedback & Assessment Design

Presenter: ASMSA
Description: Grading is where good intentions go to die. Every teacher knows the feeling: a stack of essays, a project rubric that took longer to write than any student spent on the project, and the growing sense that personalized feedback is a luxury you simply cannot afford.
This session is built around one idea: AI does the heavy lifting so your professional judgment is all that remains. Participants will work through a complete AI-assisted feedback workflow — from rubric generation to tiered commentary to differentiated response templates — and leave with tools they can use the following week.
We cover assessment design that produces richer student responses, AI-generated rubrics that actually capture what you care about, and a 'AI drafts, you refine' feedback system that cuts grading time dramatically without losing the personal connection students need. We also address data privacy in depth: what should and should never go into a public AI tool, how to anonymize student work appropriately, and when an enterprise tool makes sense.
The session also includes a brief discussion of assessment design in the age of AI — how to create tasks that require demonstrated understanding regardless of whether a student used AI assistance in their process.
Participants will leave with:
- A complete rubric for a real assignment, generated and refined during the session
- Tiered feedback templates at three performance levels for a specific assignment
- A FERPA-safe workflow for using AI in the feedback process
- Strategies for designing 'AI-honest' assessments that reveal genuine understanding
- A self-grading quiz structure they can replicate in Google Forms with Apps Script
