From Zero to Robot

Presenter: J.R. | AP Computer Science A Instructor, Mountain Home, AR | FRC Team 16 – Bomb Squad Mentor
Description: Starting a robotics program can feel overwhelming — but it doesn't have to be. In this session, a veteran CS teacher with FIRST Robotics mentorship experience walks you through everything you need to launch a robotics program from scratch, no engineering degree required.
Attendees will explore the full landscape of K–12 robotics programs available in Arkansas — including FLL, FTC, FRC, and VEX — with honest comparisons of cost, team size, and time commitment. We'll cover how to recruit students (not just the "STEM kids"), find community mentors, pitch local sponsors, and navigate a full competition season. Practical tools like a Year One Roadmap, budget breakdowns, and a common-pitfall checklist help you leave with a realistic plan rather than just inspiration.
Whether you're a complete beginner or just looking to take your existing program to the next level, this session meets you where you are.
